Tightening the taps of your tap shoes
What are tap shoe plates?
Tap shoe plates are the metal parts attached to the bottom of tap shoes that create the characteristic sound when a dancer taps their feet. These plates are typically made of either steel or aluminium and are affixed to the sole of the shoe using screws. The plates are what make the distinct "tap" sound, and they come in different shapes and sizes, depending on the style of tap dance and the preference of the dancer.
The plates have two main parts:
Toe Plate: Located on the toe of the shoe.
Heel Plate: Located on the heel of the shoe.
The sound produced depends on the material of the plates, how they're attached to the shoe, and the way the dancer strikes the floor.
Tightening the taps of your tap shoes
Over time, the screws holding the tap plates on your shoes can loosen, especially with regular use. It's important to keep the plates secure to maintain the sound quality and comfort and to ensure the plates don’t fall off. Here’s how to tighten them:
Tools You'll Need:
A screwdriver (usually a small Phillips head or flathead, depending on the screws used)
Tap shoe screw kit (optional, but helpful for replacements)
Steps to Tighten the Plates:
Inspect the screws: Check the screws on both the toe and heel plates. If any are missing or significantly loose, you may need to replace them.
Tighten screws: Using the appropriate screwdriver, tighten the screws on both the toe and heel plates. Start with the toe plate and work your way to the heel plate.
Tighten in a cross-pattern (tighten one screw, then move diagonally to the opposite screw) to ensure even pressure across the plate.
Check the alignment: Make sure that the plates are properly aligned and securely attached. If the plate is shifting, it may cause discomfort or affect the sound.
Test the sound: After tightening, tap the shoe lightly on the floor to make sure the sound is even and consistent.
Recheck periodically: Regularly check the screws before and after each practice session to ensure they are secure.
How to Care for Your Tap Shoes
Proper care for tap shoes ensures their longevity, improves performance, and helps preserve the sound quality. Here's how to care for them:
Clean the Shoes Regularly:
Wipe off dirt: After each use, wipe the shoes with a soft cloth to remove dirt, dust, or sweat from the surface.
Use a damp cloth: If your tap shoes are made of leather or synthetic material, you can gently clean the surface with a damp cloth to remove stains or scuff marks. Avoid soaking them, as this can damage the material.
Avoid using harsh chemicals: Stick to mild soap and water if needed, as harsh cleaners can damage the material or colour.
Keep the Tap Plates Clean:
Polish the tap plates: Clean the metal plates with a soft cloth and some polish to keep them shiny. Use a specialized metal cleaner if needed to remove tarnish or oxidation. This will help maintain the sound quality and prevent rust.
Dry after practice: If your tap shoes get wet (from sweat or a spill), dry them off with a soft towel and leave them to air dry. Never dry them with heat sources like hairdryers or radiators as they can damage the shoe's material.
Store Your Tap Shoes Properly:
Store in a cool, dry place: Keep your tap shoes away from direct sunlight and humidity, as this can warp the material or cause the glue to break down.
Use shoe trees or inserts: To help maintain their shape and prevent creasing, you can place shoe trees inside the shoes when you're not using them.
Replace Worn Plates or Soles:
If the tap plates or soles are worn down and no longer create the desired sound or are uncomfortable to wear, it's time to replace them. Tap shoes typically last longer if the plates are replaced periodically, especially if you're practicing frequently.
Inspect the Shoes Regularly:
Check for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the sole or broken stitches, and make repairs as necessary. Regular maintenance can extend the life of your tap shoes and keep them performing well.
By properly tightening the tap plates and caring for your shoes, you ensure that your tap shoes will give you the best sound and comfort for longer.
