Here’s all your need to know about a Ballet Tutu
A ballet tutu is a classic and iconic costume piece worn by ballerinas, particularly in classical ballet performances.
It is usually a short, full, stiff skirt made of multiple layers of tulle or other lightweight fabric. This gives the tutu it’s voluminous and ethereal appearance. The tutu is synonymous with the elegance and grace of ballet. It has become a symbol of the art form itself.
There are two main types of ballet tutus:
The classical ballet tutu is the shorter and more rigid version, typically worn in ballet performances like “Swan Lake,” “The Nutcracker,” and “Giselle.” It consists of a flat, pancake-style skirt that sticks out horizontally from the dancer’s waist. The stiff layers of tulle are sewn onto a basque. This is a fitted, heavily boned bodice that extends down to the hips.
Tutus can be purchased as a full tutu with boddice included. Or alternatively, as half tutu which will be paired with a leotard.
The romantic tutu is longer, reaching mid-calf or ankle-length, and has a softer, more flowing appearance.
This tutu is often used in ballet performances with a more lyrical or ethereal quality, such as “La Sylphide” or “Giselle” in Act II.
The romantic tutu is made with soft tulle or chiffon layers that flow gracefully with the dancer’s movements.
Tutus can be embellished with sequins, lace, crystals, and other decorations, depending on the ballet’s costume design and style. The bodice of the tutu may also feature intricate detailing, such as embroidery or beading, to complement the overall look.
Crafted for Storytelling
Ballet tutus are carefully crafted to accentuate the lines and movements of the dancer. Ballet tutus play a significant role in enhancing the storytelling and visual impact of ballet performances. Whether a ballerina wears a classical pancake tutu or a romantic tutu, the tutu remains an iconic and mesmerizing piece of ballet attire, that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
When wearing your first tutu, be sure to choose a size that fits well, so that the tulle skirt pancakes out. A common error with youngsters is to choose a tutu a little on the large size, which results in the skirt hanging rather than pancaking.
